Single Shot Bo Clerke Rifle

Walnut Single Shot IMG_1382 Walnut Single Shot IMG_1386 Walnut Single Shot IMG_1384 Walnut Single Shot IMG_1383

I received the action by itself, with several missing parts.  It appeared that it had never had a stock or a forend on the action, so I had to create the hardware to hold the forend and the stock. The stock had to be carved by hand because some of the angle of the drawscrew was at a strange angle, making the job difficult to put a hole in the stock. The first stock I made ended up having a void in the center of the stock when I got it shaped, and I ended up making a second stock.  Then it was a matter of fitting the forend and the second stock. I tried to keep the piece period by using a pre 64 Winchester buttplate that I salvaged.  The buttplate was a mess and required a lot of restoration – Bakers Express Bluing.

National Rifle Champion Derek Rodgers Trades Chickens for Riflebuilding

F-TR Nat’l Champion Derek Rodgers Shares His Winning Secrets

While attending the 2013 F-Class World Championships at Raton, we had a chance to talk with Derek Rodgers, who had just been named the 2013 U.S. F-TR National Champion. Derek’s F-TR Win at Raton makes him the only shooter to have won U.S. F-Class National titles in both F-Open and F-TR divisions. Derek was excited about his performance at Raton: “F-TR was my first love in competitive shooting and [winning the F-TR title] has always been a personal goal to achieve”. In this Q&A session, Derek tells us about his rifles and his Nationals-winning .308 Winchester load. Derek also provides some advice for new shooters in the F-TR game.

dereknat01“Doan Trevor built the entire rifle. Doan even made all of the hardware on the gun. Doan was able to drop pounds vs. ounces as a result. Doan’s 3-way butt-plate hardware alone weighs just half a pound! Doan was highly attentive in helping me build the gun the way I wanted. His bedding and fitment is clean and he has creative ideas for the competitive shooter. While my stock is fiberglass, Doan really shines when it comes to building stocks from wood blanks. In fact, Doan built the stock used by second-place finisher Lige Harris, and also fourth-place Trudie Fay. I feel fortunate to have Doan so close. He’s truly a master craftsman who can quickly turn a project into reality.”

And now the age old system of barter is being used.  Sue and Doan have 3 new chickens.!

Koa Long Range Rifle Stock with Barnard Action Complete

Koa with Barnard Action IMG_4037 Koa with Barnard Action IMG_4039 Koa with Barnard Action IMG_4041 Koa with Barnard Action IMG_4042 Koa with Barnard Action IMG_4045 Koa with Barnard Action IMG_4046Finished stock.  Note the adjustable cheekpiece as a space / gap at the rear of the stock.  The allows the shooter to adjust heel and toe without binding between the cheekpiece andt he stock.  The Koa is a Hawaiian wood.  It has been curing in my shop for 2-3 years, just waiting for the right time to become a stock.

Hawaiian Koa is one of the world’s most beautiful hardwoods, which grows only in Hawaii. Koa is world renowned, and used for the highest value finishes in furniture and commercially used products.

Koa trees are rare, tropical hardwood generally found at elevations of 2000 plus feet on the upper slopes of the islands of Hawaii (Big Island) and Maui. Koa tree reaches in height of 100 feet or more, with trunk diameters as large as 5 feet. This unique, native wood is prized for its beautiful range of color and lustrous grain from near black through reds, orange and russet tones to yellow and gold. The grain with its wavy lines and swirling color, give luster and a sense of depth of Koa unequaled by any other exotic wood in the world.

Replacing Forend #1 Ruger

This is the completed forend and stock for a a #1 Ruger. The forend was so damaged in a fire that it could not be used; however, the stock was functional. I made a complete new forend and refinished the stock and re-cut the checkering.
